Ok just before we get into the serious critiquing it's seriously worth pointing out that Mikel has by far the suavest Reel Clever profile picture that we in the office have seen. Leave a comment below if you have seen a smoother pic on the site.
Anyway back on topic, Mikel's showreel clocks in at 6:26, which is quite long for a showreel but it is presented well with a 40 second opening montage that serves the purpose of a traditional reel. After the montage we are treated to a few full scenes from short films and adverts. For a directing showreel it's a great idea to include a couple full scenes, as a director influences all aspects of the film making process. It is up to the director to make sure that a scene is coherent with a clear sense of mood and progression.
Mikel's scenes show some excellent tension and he has managed to get some great performances out of his actors. There is a scene by a river with two male characters both wearing grey which matches the color of the river and adds to the somber mood of the scene. Coupled with a nice color grade and well paced dialogue editing this scene comes together well, it is clear a lot of thought has been put into the subtleties of this and his other scene.
We give Mikel top points for a nice opening montage and awesome short film scenes and of course bonus points for the smooth profile photo. All the best for your future endeavors!
