So over a few beers we were having a moan at how a DSLR rig can cost as much as a camera.
Due to our new office still being somewhat of a construction zone, we decided to use some of the tools and scrap material lying around to build our own rig.
This rig is environmentally friendly made from 100% recyclable materials
A bit of scrap Plywood was cut and shaped to form our shoulder mount. We screwed in an old bolt and then roughly welded on a bit of steel we found in the corner. We left a hole in the top so if we needed to make it heavier we could simply drop in some stones, screws or whatever to give it more weight.
A second bit of steel was used to mount the camera
This is where our semi-drunk creative streak kicked in. "Beer bottle handles" but why stop there. Lets make a follow focus that is operated via the Beer bottle. Eliminating the need for a focus puller.
An old pipe clamp, some steel from brake cables off an old car that was around the back of our office and a few bent nails and we are done.
The result is surprisingly good - the balance feels great and the follow focus is extremely smooth with the bonus effect of not having to take your hands of the handles to use it.
This took all of 30 minutes and we had a fully functional SLR rig for the cost of 2 bottles of beer.
It has inspired us to make another one - this time sober and with some decent materials. The aim being to create a very good SLR rig for under $50
ReelClever does not condone the use of power tools while under the influence of alcohol - Though it is rather fun.
